When it comes to first dates, there are certain unwritten rules that you should abide by. Unfortunately for some of us singles, not everyone is aware of these rules. Allow us to give you a quick rundown in first date etiquette. Here are the top 5 things you should NEVER say on a first date…
“I used to come here all the time with my ex.”
There’s no comfortable way for your date to respond to this, and now, there’s an awkward silence. Any mention of ex boyfriends/girlfriends should be avoided on a first date. You’re here to get to know someone knew, so stop reminiscing and give them your undivided attention.
You’re in the real world now. LOL may be socially acceptable online but it’s not for use in everyday life. Your date says something funny? Laugh! (Note: You should also avoid ‘OMG, ROFL, BRB, G2G, WTF and so on.)
“You look really different in real life.”
What does that mean? You fancied them enough from their photo to want to date them, but now you’re not sure? Comments like this could make your date feel self conscious, and then they won’t relax and be themselves around you.
“You remind me of my mum/dad.”
Oh hi Friend Zone! Unless you’re trying to let someone down gently, never EVER tell someone they remind you of your mum/dad. Sure your parents are wonderful people, and you meant it as a compliment, but would you want to make out with them? Nope, didn’t think so.
“I’m going out after this.”
So you had such low expectations for your date, you went ahead and arranged post date plans? Shame on you. You’ve now put a time limit on your date and it will loom over the pair of you like a bad smell.
The best dates are the ones where you both feel relaxed and at ease with each other. Don’t make things awkward, focus on the now, and enjoy getting to know each other.
